What this is about
The ABC PLEASE Skills bundle covers the core vulnerability-reduction practices in DBT's Emotion Regulation module. ABC stands for Accumulate positive emotions, Build mastery, and Cope ahead. PLEASE stands for treating Physical illness, balanced Eating, Avoiding mood-Altering substances, balanced Sleep, and Exercise. Together they address the two main dimensions of emotional resilience: increasing positive input (ABC) and reducing biological vulnerability (PLEASE).
The bundle reflects Linehan's premise that emotional dysregulation often has real causes in real life conditions — not just faulty cognition — and that changing those conditions is a legitimate and necessary part of building a life worth living.
The components
A – Accumulate positive emotions: Positive Emotionen aufbauen
When what is needed is not primarily acute crisis regulation, but rather the long-term development of positive counterweights, joy and closeness to life.B – Build mastery: Kompetenz aufbauen
When stabilization requires not only reassurance, but also noticeable competence, success in action and inner uprightness.C – Cope ahead: Vorausschauend bewältigen
When upcoming appointments, conversations, conflicts or risky situations should not be handled spontaneously, but rather with foresight.PLEASE – Physical illness, Eating, Avoid mood-altering substances, Sleep, Exercise: reduce physical vulnerability
When not only acute regulation is needed, but the reduction of basic vulnerability via everyday body factors.
