Sleep Hygiene
When sleep needs to be stabilized as a central lever for reduced emotional vulnerability.
Organize sleep-related habits and framework conditions so that sleep becomes more stable, more restful and less prone to disruption.
When does this fit?
When not only individual nights are difficult, but sleep as a recurring stress amplifier must be systematically improved.

What this is about
Sleep Hygiene is the DBT protocol for improving the quality and consistency of sleep through behavioral and environmental practices. Adequate sleep is foundational to emotional regulation — sleep deprivation consistently increases emotional reactivity, reduces the capacity for skillful behavior, and makes all other DBT skills harder to access.
Sleep hygiene practices include maintaining a consistent sleep schedule (particularly wake time), creating a sleep-conducive environment, limiting caffeine and alcohol, restricting vigorous activity near bedtime, avoiding screens before sleep, and using the bed only for sleep and sex. The protocol also addresses common sleep-disrupting patterns specific to emotionally dysregulated individuals, including rumination at bedtime and fear of nightmares.
Step by step
Work through the steps at your own pace. For written exercises, you can use paper or a notebook.
- Review bedtime and waking times and aim for a consistent rhythm.
- Make the sleep environment quiet, dark and comfortable. Consider late caffeine, alcohol, heavy meals and strong stimulation as possible obstacles.
- If calm but awake in bed for a prolonged period, temporarily do a quiet activity outside bed and return when sleepy.
- If rumination dominates, attend to calm breathing and notice thoughts without pursuing them.
- Record habits and helpful attempts using the linked sleep-hygiene practice sheet.
