Priority in the path

This node fits early in the path when fear or panic or strong emotional activation are in the foreground.

What this is about

Cope Ahead is the practice of mentally rehearsing effective coping before entering an emotionally difficult situation — not just planning, but vividly imagining being in the situation and responding skillfully. Research shows that imagining skillful behavior activates many of the same brain regions as actually performing it, making the skilled response more automatic when needed.

The steps involve identifying the upcoming situation and the emotions likely to arise, deciding which skills to use, imagining the situation vividly in the present tense, and rehearsing the effective response — including coping with setbacks within the scenario. The rehearsal replaces fear with a sense of preparedness.
