When clarity of purpose is to be maintained, but movement and compromise are necessary.

Bring flexibility and the ability to compromise without completely giving up the core concern or your own position.

When does this fit?

When clarity should be maintained, but a rigid course would block the solution rather than promote it.

Priority in the path

This node becomes especially important when conflict with others describes the actual situation.

What this is about

Negotiate is the final step of DEAR MAN: being willing to give something to get something, and offering solutions when the original request is not granted in the way asked. Negotiation is not capitulating — it is finding a workable middle ground that serves both parties better than an impasse. It may involve modifying the original request, proposing alternatives, or asking what the other person would find acceptable. It can also involve turning the problem over: asking the other person what they think a solution might look like. Negotiation requires flexibility about means while remaining clear about the underlying goal.
