Mutual Validation

Keywords:
Relationship negotiationMutual validationTwo-sided relational validation

When not just one side, but both perspectives in the conflict have to be made understandable.

Make both perspectives understandable in a conflict so that validation does not remain one-sided and the relationship does not lose its reciprocity.

When does this fit?

When not only one person needs to be validated, but the relationship thrives on both perspectives becoming comprehensible.

Priority in the path

This node becomes especially important when conflict with others describes the actual situation.

What this is about

Mutual Validation is an interpersonal technique for breaking deadlock in difficult conversations: acknowledging the other person's feelings, needs, and motivations as understandable, while also validating one's own experience. The move is explicitly bidirectional: first conveying I understand where you are coming from, then conveying On my end, here is what I am experiencing and why.

Mutual validation does not require agreement with the other person's position — it requires acknowledging that their experience makes sense from their perspective. When people feel invalidated, they escalate; when they feel heard, they become more capable of hearing in return. The technique addresses the communication deadlock that occurs when both parties are primarily focused on being heard rather than hearing.

Validation vs. Mutual Validation

Helps distinguish whether one side first needs to be made understandable or a conflict must be held through mutual validation.

When choose this concept instead?

Start here when two sides feel mutually misunderstood and two-way understandability is missing.

  • makes both perspectives in a conflict mutually understandable
  • fits when one-sided validation is not enough and the relationship depends on reciprocity
  • asks first: How do both viewpoints become understandable at the same time?
