TIP Skills
When extreme tension needs to be quickly regulated through the body.
Quickly reduce extreme physiological activation so that thinking, self-control and further skill use become possible again.
When does this fit?
When what is needed is not primary understanding or talking, but rather quick, body-oriented crisis regulation.
Priority in the path
This node sits close to acute crisis and should be read more as an early step than as later deepening.
What this is about
TIP Skills is the DBT bundle of physiological crisis survival skills: Temperature (cold water on the face to trigger the dive reflex), Intense exercise (aerobic activity to discharge stress chemistry), Paced breathing (slow exhalation to activate the parasympathetic system), and Paired muscle relaxation (tensing and releasing muscle groups paired with exhalation).
All four work by directly modifying body chemistry rather than through cognition or language — which is exactly what makes them effective at the skills breakdown point, when thinking has become impossible. TIP skills do not solve the problem that caused the crisis; they reduce arousal to the level where other skills become accessible again.
The components
T – Temperature: Temperatur
When the TIP skills need to be regulated particularly quickly via the body and not via language or cognition.I – Intense exercise: Intensive Bewegung
When high tension not only calms you down, it should first be physically reduced so that other skills can take action.P – Paced breathing: Gezielte Atmung
When acute tension requires immediate, close-to-the-body and discreet regulation.P – Paired muscle relaxation: Gezielte Muskelentspannung
When physical alertness needs to be specifically regulated via muscle and tension levels.

Immediate Help vs. Long-Term Building
Helps distinguish whether you currently need acute interruption and downregulation or more repeatable building and preparation steps.
When choose this concept instead?
Start here when the body must be down-regulated quickly.
- regulates the system quickly through physiological signals
- fits near-panic, extreme tension, or strong bodily activation
- asks first: how do I down-regulate my system quickly through the body?

For comparison
When not only preparing for a single challenge, but also building a basic feeling of manageability and ability to cope with it.

Weekly Regulator
For comparison
When not just a single moment, but the ongoing weekly structure for regulation and skill use should be supported.
