TIP: Paired Muscle Relaxation
TIPPaired muscle relaxation(= Gezielte Muskelentspannung)
When physical tension needs to be systematically released in order to become calmer again.
Systematically link tension and release in the body so that retained activation can be better recognized and reduced.
When does this fit?
When physical alertness needs to be specifically regulated via muscle and tension levels.
Priority in the path
This node sits close to acute crisis and should be read more as an early step than as later deepening.
What this is about
Paired muscle relaxation is a variant of progressive muscle relaxation: muscle groups are deliberately tensed — noticing the sensation of tension while breathing in — and then released while breathing out and silently saying the word "relax." The deliberate tensing before releasing produces deeper relaxation than attempting to relax without first tensing.
The pairing of muscle release with exhalation gradually conditions an automatic calming response: the word "relax" on the exhale becomes a learned signal for the nervous system. As a crisis survival skill, the focus is on noticing body tension and letting it go consciously — not on achieving complete relaxation. Regular practice significantly increases effectiveness: in a crisis, the skill works better when the body already knows the pattern.
