When strong physical activation needs to be reduced quickly via temperature stimuli.

Use temperature stimuli to quickly postpone strong physical activation and shut down the nervous system.

When does this fit?

When the TIP skills need to be regulated particularly quickly via the body and not via language or cognition.

Priority in the path

This node sits close to acute crisis and should be read more as an early step than as later deepening.

What this is about

Cold water on the face triggers the dive reflex — a physiological protective response in which the parasympathetic nervous system is activated and heart rate drops measurably within seconds. This directly interrupts the sympathetic overactivation that characterizes extreme emotional arousal. The skill acts through body chemistry rather than cognition or language.

In practice: submerge the face up to the temples in a bowl of cold water for 30–60 seconds while holding the breath — or hold a cold gel pack over the eyes and upper cheeks. The effect is short-lived: if attention returns to the triggering situation immediately afterward, the emotion can quickly resurface. It is therefore important to follow up with another skill. Caution: individuals with heart conditions or other medical concerns should consult their physician before using this technique.
