When effective reactions must be practiced in advance so that they are available in the real moment.

Mentally and behaviorally play through stressful or risky situations in advance so that effective reactions are available more quickly in the real moment.

When does this fit?

When impending stress, fear or risky situations require targeted preparation so that old, automatic behavior does not take control again.

Priority in the path

This node fits early in the path when fear or panic or strong emotional activation are in the foreground.

What this is about

Exposure-Based Cognitive Rehearsal combines exposure principles with imagery rehearsal to address both the emotional avoidance that sustains distress and the behavioral deficits that prevent skillful coping. The approach involves identifying a feared or avoided situation, creating a vivid mental image of it in the present tense, and then rehearsing effective coping within that imagined scenario — including anticipating and coping with setbacks.

This is closely related to DBT's Cope Ahead skill but with an explicit exposure component: the goal is not only to prepare for the future situation but to reduce the conditioned fear response to it through repeated imaginal contact without avoidance.
