Chain Analysis

Keywords:
Behavioral analysisBehavior chainBehavior sequence analysis

If you want to understand a problematic pattern step by step backwards.

Make problematic behavior or an escalation understandable in its concrete sequence of steps so that triggers, vulnerabilities, decisions and consequences become visible.

When does this fit?

If, after a difficult event, it should be clear where the chain began, how it was built up and where different interventions can be made in the future.

Priority in the path

This node is more about preparation, stabilization, or later deepening around orientation and understanding.

What this is about

Chain Analysis is the core behavioral assessment tool in DBT: a structured series of questions that traces the chain of events leading to and following a problem behavior, link by link. Any behavior can be understood as a series of connected components — vulnerability factors, prompting events, internal responses, behavioral links, and consequences — and identifying these components is the first step in finding where the chain can be broken.

Chain Analysis is used repeatedly in DBT because patterns only become visible across multiple analyses: what looks like a single impulsive act usually reveals a predictable sequence when examined carefully. The purpose is not blame but understanding — changing behavior requires knowing what actually causes it.
