Nonjudgmentally

Keywords:
How skillsNonjudgmental stanceJudgment release

When evaluation narrows the view and only a non-judgmental attitude creates space again.

Strengthen a non-judgmental attitude so that perception is not immediately narrowed through devaluation, moral interpretation or self-criticism.

When does this fit?

When before further understanding or action, the evaluative narrowness must first be released so that reality can be seen more precisely again.

Priority in the path

This node fits early in the path when inner restlessness or strong emotional activation are in the foreground.

What this is about

Nonjudgmentally is the first mindfulness how skill: the practice of observing, describing, and participating without evaluating experience as good or bad, valuable or worthless. It does not mean approval, denial of consequences, or false positivity. It means letting go of the labeling that adds a layer of evaluation on top of bare observation — replacing this is terrible with this is what is happening.

Judgmental thinking sustains emotional reactivity: calling something bad intensifies the aversive response to it. Being nonjudgmental does not eliminate the ability to notice consequences — it separates the observation of consequences from the evaluation of worth. Letting go of should is central: replacing demands on reality with descriptions of what is, or what one wants.
