What this is about
Gentle is the first GIVE skill: being respectful and non-threatening in approach. Gentleness specifically means no attacks, no threats, no judging, and no disrespect. Attacks and threats have limited effectiveness: people may comply when monitored but will not when not. More importantly, threats and attacks damage the relationship itself, reducing future cooperation and trust. Judging — name-calling, implied put-downs, guilt trips, or moralizing — communicates contempt rather than concern.
Disrespect, even when expressed nonverbally through tone or body language while using polite words, undermines the relationship in ways that are hard to repair. Gentleness is not passivity or agreeing with everything — it is the discipline of pursuing goals without weapons.
