When real listening and affection must be actively maintained in contact.

Show genuine interest and attentiveness so that the other person feels addressed and not just processed or dismissed.

When does this fit?

When openness in a relationship depends on you clearly sticking with the other person and not just with your own goals.

Priority in the path

This node becomes especially important when conflict with others describes the actual situation.

What this is about

Act Interested is the second GIVE skill: listening to the other person's perspective, giving them space to respond, not interrupting, not mind-reading intentions without checking, and being patient. People respond well to genuine interest — they feel more willing to engage when they feel heard. The skill is act interested, not be interested: there are situations where choosing to listen is a deliberate act of effectiveness, not an expression of genuine curiosity.

What matters is the behavior of attending, not the internal state. Acting interested includes not assuming the other person is being hostile, hurtful, or uncaring without checking — and if there is concern about what the other is thinking, asking gently and listening to the answer.
