What this is about
Doing Mind and Being Mind distinguish two fundamental modes of relating to experience. Doing Mind is goal-directed, problem-solving, future-oriented — it is concerned with the gap between how things are and how they should be, and is always trying to close it. Being Mind is present-centered, experiential, and non-striving — it receives what is rather than trying to change it.
In DBT and mindfulness-based traditions more broadly, the problem is not Doing Mind itself but the habitual application of Doing Mode to experience that cannot be solved — particularly to emotional pain. Trying to fix or eliminate emotional experience as if it were a problem to be solved typically intensifies it. Being Mind is the mode in which experience is simply received and allowed to pass.
