What this is about
Clear Mind is DBT's conception of the optimal mental state for recovery from addiction: the synthesis of addict mind and clean mind. Addict mind is ruled by urges and cravings, making no real effort to resist. Clean mind is abstinent but dangerously overconfident — believing the addiction is defeated and dropping vigilance against relapse triggers. Clear mind maintains abstinence while staying aware of the ongoing risk of relapse and actively using relapse prevention strategies.
Like Wise Mind in the general DBT framework, Clear Mind holds opposing realities simultaneously: I am currently not using, and I am still at risk. The danger of clean mind — believing the battle is over — is treated as a distinct and serious relapse risk.
