Dialectical Abstinence
When sticking with it without relapse has to be combined with realistic handling of missteps.
Combine relapse-free persistence with realistic dealing with regressions so that neither a total giving-up mentality nor naive self-confidence arise.
When does this fit?
When abstinence or change goals require clear determination and a flexible return to the course.

What this is about
Dialectical abstinence is DBT's relapse prevention approach for addictive behaviors: a synthesis of total commitment to abstinence when currently abstinent, and harm reduction following any lapse. The approach resolves the tension between the two dominant models — abstinence-only commitment (which stays clean longer but often spirals after a slip) and harm reduction (which recovers faster from slips but relapses sooner).
Dialectical abstinence holds both simultaneously: treat every moment of abstinence as requiring 100% commitment, and treat every slip as requiring immediate harm reduction rather than catastrophizing or giving up. The dialectical move is to refuse the either-or framing and accept both as simultaneously true and necessary.
