What this is about
This navigation question addresses one of the most practical challenges in DBT: when distress is high, which skill should be used first? The answer depends on the level of arousal and the source of the problem. If physiological arousal is extreme — at the skills breakdown point — TIP skills come first, because they are the only skills that work when thinking has become impossible. If arousal is high but thinking is still possible, STOP provides a pause.
If the emotion does not fit the facts, Check the Facts leads to Opposite Action. If it does fit the facts, Problem Solving is needed. If the situation cannot be changed, distress tolerance and radical acceptance apply. The question guides users through a decision tree that matches skill to situation.
