DBT - Overview
If you need the overall picture of DBT before you go into individual skills or modules.
Organize the overall model of the DBT so that module roles, basic assumptions and typical entry points become visible as a coherent framework.
When does this fit?
If it is not yet clear which module or skill is right and therefore the overall DBT picture is needed first.
Priority in the path
This node is more about preparation, stabilization, or later deepening around orientation and understanding.
What this is about
DBT Overview provides an orientation to the overall structure of Dialectical Behavior Therapy as a system — its four skill modules, the dialectical philosophy underlying it, the biosocial theory of emotion dysregulation, and the logic connecting skills training to treatment goals. It is typically taught at the start of skills training to give participants a map of what they will be learning and why.
The overview establishes that DBT is not primarily about calming down or positive thinking, but about developing a comprehensive repertoire of skills for building a life worth living — regulating emotions, tolerating distress, improving relationships, and developing mindful awareness as the foundation for all of it.
DBT foundations
These foundations answer different questions about the overall model: emotion dysregulation describes the problem area, biosocial theory explains it, and dialectics connects acceptance with change.
