"text": "This navigation question helps users understand the component structure of DBT skill bundles — which individual skills or steps belong to which bundle, and how they work together. Key bundle structures: STOP (Stop, Take a step back, Observe, Proceed mindfully); TIP (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, Paired muscle relaxation); DEAR MAN (Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear confident, Negotiate); GIVE (Gentle, Interested, Validate, Easy manner); FAST (Fair, no Apologies, Stick to values, Truthful); ABC PLEASE (Accumulate positive emotions, Build mastery, Cope ahead + PLEASE physical self-care skills). Understanding bundle structure helps users practice the full sequence rather than isolated steps.",

Each letter stands for a step: Describe the situation using observable facts only; Express feelings or beliefs clearly without expecting mind-reading; Assert wishes directly, neither beating around the bush nor demanding; Reinforce by explaining what the other person gains from giving you what you want; stay Mindful of the objective, not getting pulled off track by attacks or distractions; Appear confident in manner even when feeling uncertain; and Negotiate by being willing to give something to get something. DEAR MAN is objectives effectiveness — it serves the goal of getting what you actually want. It works best when combined with GIVE skills for maintaining the relationship, and FAST skills for maintaining self-respect.",

GIVE skills work because people respond to how they are treated as much as to what is being requested. Gentleness and interest make others want to engage. Each letter stands for: be Fair (to oneself and to the other person); no Apologies (no over-apologizing for having needs, opinions, or a point of view); Stick to values (avoid compromising integrity to get approval or avoid conflict); and be Truthful (no lying, no acting helpless, no exaggerating). FAST skills address the inner cost of interaction: not just whether one got what one wanted, but whether one can respect oneself afterward. Self-respect is not maintained through always getting one's way, but through how one engages — whether the engagement reflects one's own values, honesty, and fairness.",

Participate is entering fully into activity, becoming what one is doing without self-conscious separation. "text": "The ABC PLEASE Skills bundle covers the core vulnerability-reduction practices in DBT's Emotion Regulation module. ABC stands for Accumulate positive emotions, Build mastery, and Cope ahead. PLEASE stands for treating Physical illness, balanced Eating, Avoiding mood-Altering substances, balanced Sleep, and Exercise. Together they address the two main dimensions of emotional resilience: increasing positive input (ABC) and reducing biological vulnerability (PLEASE). The bundle reflects Linehan's premise that emotional dysregulation often has real causes in real life conditions — not just faulty cognition — and that changing those conditions is a legitimate and necessary part of building a life worth living.",

Relevant skill categories are mindfulness at a meta-level, psychoeducation-facing skills (understanding the biosocial model, function of emotions, validation), and the DBT framework itself. A key clinical mistake is rushing past orientation toward skill application, which produces superficial skill use disconnected from the underlying rationale. Clinicians and clients who understand why a skill exists — not just what to do — demonstrate better generalization and more creative adaptation to new situations."

DBT treats conflicts not as problems to be avoided but as situations requiring navigation with both goal clarity and relationship care. The relevant skill categories are interpersonal effectiveness (DEAR MAN for goal pursuit, GIVE for relationship preservation, FAST for self-respect), emotion regulation to reduce activation before engaging, and mindfulness. The key clinical distinction is whether the primary goal is the outcome (what I want), the relationship (how I want to feel about this person afterward), or self-respect (how I want to feel about myself). Premature problem-solving without first managing emotional arousal is the most common failure mode."
