"text": "Daily Practices for Emotional Health is a McKay Workbook framework for building a sustainable daily routine that supports emotional regulation across all skill modules. It integrates mindfulness practice, physical care (exercise, sleep, nutrition), pleasurable activities, mastery activities, and social connection into a coherent daily structure. The premise is identical to DBT's PLEASE skills and ABC framework: emotional health is not achieved in moments of crisis but through the accumulated effect of daily choices that either increase or decrease vulnerability to emotional dysregulation. The framework translates the skills into concrete daily commitments that can be tracked and maintained.",

ABC stands for Accumulate positive emotions, Build mastery, and Cope ahead. PLEASE stands for treating Physical illness, balanced Eating, Avoiding mood-Altering substances, balanced Sleep, and Exercise. Together they address the two main dimensions of emotional resilience: increasing positive input (ABC) and reducing biological vulnerability (PLEASE). The bundle reflects Linehan's premise that emotional dysregulation often has real causes in real life conditions — not just faulty cognition — and that changing those conditions is a legitimate and necessary part of building a life worth living.",

The diary card serves multiple functions: it increases awareness of emotional patterns and their connections to behavior; it creates accountability for skill use between sessions; it provides the therapist with a current picture of what has been happening; and the act of recording itself is reactive — meaning that simply tracking a behavior tends to change it. Target behaviors (both behaviors to increase and behaviors to decrease) are identified collaboratively and tracked on the card, making the diary card a direct link between session work and daily life.",

"text": "Exposure-Based Cognitive Rehearsal combines exposure principles with imagery rehearsal to address both the emotional avoidance that sustains distress and the behavioral deficits that prevent skillful coping. The approach involves identifying a feared or avoided situation, creating a vivid mental image of it in the present tense, and then rehearsing effective coping within that imagined scenario — including anticipating and coping with setbacks. This is closely related to DBT's Cope Ahead skill but with an explicit exposure component: the goal is not only to prepare for the future situation but to reduce the conditioned fear response to it through repeated imaginal contact without avoidance.",

The How Skills operate like a quality filter for all other DBT skills — they specify the attitude and orientation with which any practice should be engaged. Emotion mind is controlled by moods and urges; reasonable mind by facts and logic. Wise Mind is neither: it is the experience of inner knowing that transcends both. Everyone has Wise Mind, though not everyone can access it reliably. It is sometimes experienced as a particular place in the body — a sense of quiet certainty, of knowing something to be true from the inside rather than being convinced from the outside. Finding Wise Mind requires letting go of both the urgency of emotion and the sterility of pure logic, and learning to recognize the integrated sense of rightness that comes when both are held together. It can be cultivated through practice: repeated experience of stopping, attending, and waiting for the integrated knowing to emerge.",

The How Skills operate like a quality filter for all other DBT skills — they specify the attitude and orientation with which any practice should be engaged. "text": "Wise Mind is the synthesis of emotion mind and reasonable mind — a state of knowing that integrates emotion and reason rather than alternating between them.

It is filled out daily and reviewed at the start of every individual therapy session.

The module begins with understanding: emotions have functions (motivating action, communicating to self and others) and are complex full-system responses involving biology, cognition, behavior, and expression. Changing any part of the system can change the whole. The practical skills fall into two broad categories: changing unwanted emotions through Check the Facts, Opposite Action, and Problem Solving; and building resilience through the ABC PLEASE skills that reduce biological vulnerability and increase positive experience over time.",

It is filled out daily and reviewed at the start of every individual therapy session.

"text": "Preparing for strain is a prevention-oriented situation in DBT — the goal is to reduce vulnerability before stress accumulates, rather than managing a crisis in progress. This distinguishes it sharply from crisis and acute emotion regulation situations. The relevant skill categories are PLEASE (Physical illness, Eating balanced, Avoiding mood-altering substances, Sleep, Exercise), ABC (Accumulating positive emotions, Building mastery, Coping ahead), and mindfulness for maintaining awareness of current vulnerability. The most common mistake is treating preparation as optional or deferring it until conditions are already difficult. Coping ahead is particularly underused: mentally rehearsing how to handle expected stressors makes the actual skills more available when needed."
