"text": "Build Mastery is the practice of doing something each day that creates a genuine sense of competence, accomplishment, or capability. Mastery is not the same as comfort: it requires choosing tasks that are genuinely challenging but achievable — neither so easy that no sense of accomplishment follows, nor so difficult that failure is likely. Research on depression consistently shows that behavioral mastery is a core component of effective treatment. A series of accomplishments, however small, gradually shifts the self-concept toward competence and raises the emotional baseline. The key is calibration: starting slightly above the current skill level, then adjusting. The accumulated evidence of being able to do things becomes a buffer against helplessness and hopelessness.",

"text": "Cope Ahead is the practice of mentally rehearsing effective coping before entering an emotionally difficult situation — not just planning, but vividly imagining being in the situation and responding skillfully. Research shows that imagining skillful behavior activates many of the same brain regions as actually performing it, making the skilled response more automatic when needed. The steps involve identifying the upcoming situation and the emotions likely to arise, deciding which skills to use, imagining the situation vividly in the present tense, and rehearsing the effective response — including coping with setbacks within the scenario. The rehearsal replaces fear with a sense of preparedness.",

Changing any part of the system can change the whole. "text": "Preparing for strain is a prevention-oriented situation in DBT — the goal is to reduce vulnerability before stress accumulates, rather than managing a crisis in progress. This distinguishes it sharply from crisis and acute emotion regulation situations. The relevant skill categories are PLEASE (Physical illness, Eating balanced, Avoiding mood-altering substances, Sleep, Exercise), ABC (Accumulating positive emotions, Building mastery, Coping ahead), and mindfulness for maintaining awareness of current vulnerability. The most common mistake is treating preparation as optional or deferring it until conditions are already difficult. Coping ahead is particularly underused: mentally rehearsing how to handle expected stressors makes the actual skills more available when needed."

It frequently signals that another person represents something linked to your own values, deprivation, or unrealized wishes. In DBT the useful question is not simply how to get rid of envy, but how to translate comparison into orientation. Relevant skills are nonjudgmental awareness, check-the-facts against exaggeration, and building mastery or positive experiences in your own life. The opposite action for unjustified envy is counting your own blessings — actively noticing and valuing what you already have — and resisting the urge to diminish what others possess. Envy becomes most harmful when it quietly turns into resentment or chronic self-devaluation."
